Odoo Many2many Tags Cut Off with "..."? Why It Happens and How to Show the Full Text
Odoo cuts long many2many tags with "..." and blocks text selection. Here is why it happens, what it takes to fix it yourself, and a ready-made app for Odoo 14 to 19.
If your tags have meaningful names - customer segments, project phases, product categories - you've seen this: Odoo shows "Enterprise Human Resource Mana..." and you have to hover or open the record to read the rest. You can't easily select and copy the tag text either.
Why Odoo truncates many2many tags
It's a deliberate design choice in the many2many_tags widget, not a bug:
- Each tag has a fixed maximum width, so a long name is cut and finished with "...".
- Tags are set to stay on one line - they never wrap.
- Tags are not selectable: in a form a click opens the color picker, in a list view a click opens the record. So you can't simply highlight the text and copy it.
That keeps forms compact, but it hurts as soon as your tags carry real information: customer segments, project phases, product categories, analytic tags.
Can you fix it yourself?
A developer can override the widget's styling in a custom module. It looks like a small CSS change at first, but a reliable fix runs into several traps:
- Specificity battles: Odoo's own rules and Bootstrap utility classes win unless your override is written carefully.
- Clicks still fire: making the text selectable isn't enough - you also need JavaScript to tell "selecting text" apart from "clicking the tag", in both form and list views.
- Every version is different: the widget markup changed between Odoo 15 and 16, Odoo 14/15 wrap tag text in a link (dragging the mouse starts a link drag instead of selecting text), and Odoo 14 even loads assets in a different way.
- Testing: form, list and kanban views, editable and read-only, on every version you run - and again after each Odoo upgrade.
